Alexander Says Shutting Down The Government Should Never Be A Bargaining Chip

Saturday, January 20, 2018

Senator Lamar Alexander on Saturday urged Senate Democrats to reopen the government.

“Shutting down the government of the United States of America should never ever be a bargaining chip for any issue. Period. It should be to governing as chemical warfare is to real warfare,” Senator Alexander said in remarks to his colleagues on the Senate floor.  “It should be banned.”

“More than 50 senators last night, including almost all Republicans and 5 Democrats, voted to keep the government open.

The president has said he would sign the continuing resolution to keep the government open. The Democrats are closing down the government because they want a result on an important issue, and they want it now.”

He urged Democrats to support reopening the government. “The American people sent us here to make the government work for them, not to shut it down,” Senator Alexander said. “That should be unthinkable. That should be like chemical warfare. We should never even consider that. So I urge my friends on the other side, let Senator McConnell and Senator Schumer—who are veteran senators, they respect this institution, they're friends with all of us, they're able to make a decision—let them sit down themselves and find an agreement to get this government back open. Let's go to work on the two-year budget agreement, the children's health insurance program, on lowering the cost of health insurance for people buying insurance in the individual market, on the DACA bill and on disaster relief. Let's get that done in a very short period of time.”

Reflections On Billy Graham

Sandra and I are saddened this morning after learning of the death of Billy Graham. We rejoice today, because Mr. Graham once said "It will be reported that Billy Graham has died, but that won't be the truth. He said the truth is that he had only moved to a new location".  I remember when we named 15th Street as Billy Graham Avenue, his daughter Gigi came for the dedication ... (click for more)

Roy Exum: One Principal’s Reaction

On the morning after the mass shooting in Florida last week, a 17-year-old at Ledyard High School in Connecticut made an offhand comment during his first period class, “I could buy an AR-15.” At that, all the teachers panicked. Really. The school was soon so rattled by the comment the principal called the cops. And those five words got the child shackled, taken into custody, and ... (click for more)

CLEVELAND, Tenn. – After one quarter, Cleveland needed to get junior workhorse Dionte Ware “involved” in the offense during Tuesday’s District 5-3A tournament championship game against Walker Valley. After scoring zero first-quarter points, Ware showed some life with six points in the second period, but he wasn’t yet weaponized. At halftime, Cleveland coaches addressed ... (click for more)

Signal Mountain Sweeps 6-AA Tournament Titles

The third time was the charm for the Signal Mountain boys, but not so for the Red Bank girls. The second-seeded Lionettes were facing the top-seeded Signal Mountain Lady Eagles.   The third ... (click for more)
